In Maine, you can get a mortgage loan, home equity loan or a home equity line of credit from a mortgage broker. Maine mortgage brokers are overseen by the Consumer Credit Regulation Department of the Main Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Mortgage brokers are officially referred to in Maine as a credit service organization (CSO). But like mortgage brokers in most other states, credit service organizations are licensed through the National Mortgage Licensing System. This requires numerous hours of education and ethics courses for mortgage professionals.
Unlike many other states, Maine credit service organizations or mortgage brokers must not maintain a physical address within the state to do business there. However, they must be registered with the Maine Office of Consumer Credit Regulation and be licensed as a credit service organization in Maine.
Maine also has an affiliate of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers called the Maine Association of Mortgage Brokers. Members of this association follow additional codes of ethics and professionalism.
